Movie magic – the power of video

Jul 16, 2013 by Mark Baines Category: Marketing

No time to read copy? Find photos interesting but not engaging? Then you need video.

Research shows that even time-poor consumers are happy to watch video – that’s probably why they’re time-poor in the first place!

Video is big – thanks mainly to YouTube – we all know that; an incredible 60 hours of new content is uploaded to YouTube every minute.

But what marketers often ignore is the power of the moving image:

  • It really engages with viewers;
  • It gets the point across in an easy way;
  • It is memorable;
  • People enjoy watching (as long as it’s interesting!);
  • It can be used as part of an integrated strategy.

But there are also lots of on-pack warnings:

  • Your first ideas are always too expensive!
  • Nobody is going to waste their time watching a ‘sales’ video;
  • Video content often has a short shelf life, so consider the opportunity cost. Is it really worth it?

I love video. I watch them every day. They’re the most powerful way of getting your message across – an essential part of your marketing mix. Get it right, and you’ll get a good ROI. Get it wrong, and you’ll have blown a lot of money!
